Thought for the Week – Do you still drive with your hands at 10 and 2?

I recently learned that the US National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) no longer recommends placing your hands at 10 and 2 o’clock on the steering wheel when driving.

The new advice calls for a firm yet gentle grip on the steering wheel using only your fingers, not your palms, with your thumbs on the outside, never hooked inside the steering wheel while turning. This promotes safe, undistracted driving that significantly increases the chances of arriving safely at our destination.

Of course, not many of us follow this advice. Common techniques include driving with a double iced latte in one hand, smart phone in the other, a forearm on the steering wheel, and sometimes even a small dog on our lap. We only discover we need fuel when the audible emergency notice alerts us that we have 10 miles until empty.

Some of us are driving our B2B marketing and sales operations under the same distracting conditions!

We should be driving our marketing and sales with our eyes on a destination, or goal. We ought to monitor where we are and our rate of progress. How about taking the time to evaluate the resources we have and how quickly they’re being consumed?

Like driving, too often we hop into our marketing and sales role, grind away at the same activities each year, attend the same tradeshows, and call the same list of contacts asking if they have anything new going on. And we arrive at the end of the year wondering how quickly it came and unsure about how we got there.

So, if you find yourself going through the same routine week in and week out, remove the distractions, put both hands on the wheel and take control of where your marketing and sales are going.

Oh, and put the latte in that cool cupholder that came with your car!

I hope you have a great week!
