Thought for the Week – Are you practicing balance in your life?

Physical exercise has always been an important part of my life. But as I grew older and creakier, I abandoned the “no brain, nor pain, no gain” approach to exercise.

Doing light-weight squats on a bosu ball or standing on one leg while doing a military press with dumbbells is now a common part of my workouts. My first attempts at these odd routines did not go well. It was embarrassing at times and some of the young gym bros would ask me if I needed assistance. They referred to me as sir in a “maybe you’re too old to be doing this” kind of way.

Successfully getting through the exercises required quite a bit of practice, but I gained better balance over time. And after a while, I started to feel better, less achy, youthfully rejuvenated.

Practice was the key!

Would you say you have work-life balance? Do you have balance at work? Are you present for the things that really matter? If you answered anything other than yes to these questions, try applying this questioning framework.

  • Is it important to someone who is important to me?
  • Is my presence necessary for accomplishment?
  • Is the time critical or a one-time event?

It may not go perfectly from the start, but things will improve with practice.

I hope you have a great week!
