THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK - How do you answer to the big why question?

Larry King, who passed away in 2021, is among the best interviewers of my lifetime. His style was distinctively simple and studied by many but matched by few.

While he was being interviewed once, he was asked about his approach to questions. His response was that he sought the “why” that drove people to do what they do. “Why“ is a powerful question because it leads to deeper understanding.

Asking ourselves ”why” questions simultaneously helps us reflect on the past, clarify the present, and define the future. Together, these things help us define our purpose or simply the purpose of some task we’re working on.

“Why” is at the center of Simon Sinek’s Golden Circle and represents the very first thing business leaders should ask themselves. Before proceeding to what and how, leaders must have clarity on the why of their business.

I recently had a great conversation with Wilfred Alfred, a brand strategist who helps start-ups discover their identities, their purpose. He asks the start-up leadership a lot of “why” questions. He strongly believes that brands who understand their larger purpose are more successful. And you can read more about him in our newsletter this Wednesday.

In the meantime, whether you do it on a personal level or apply it to your own business, explore your purpose this week by asking yourself “why”.

I hope you have a great week!
