THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK - Are you the smartest person in the room?
“If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.” That is a quote attributed to many leaders and repeated by many more.
It is meant to convey the value of working with or surrounding yourself with a good team. Doing so, brings diversity of thought and expertise to your efforts. And it has been held up as a winning formula by successful CEOs as well as US Presidents.
So, if you are the smartest person in the room, you could be in the wrong room. If you are a business leader, you may have not hired the right people.
But you don’t have to be in a leadership role to apply this thinking. Who do you seek out for advice at work? Who do socialize with outside of work? Are they people who challenge you to be better? What kind of content, be it podcasts, books, or journals, do you access regularly to stay informed and keep your mind sharp?
I’m not encouraging you to ditch your longtime friends. Old friends are the best, they know us and can be honest with us.
But this week, pay attention to who you go to for advice. Seek out experts who will challenge the way you think, your perceptions, and help you grow.
I hope you have a great week!
